30. Les Côtes-de-Corps, France
October 18
The sun forced his eyelids open. Outside the window, the snowcapped peaks were a charming contrast to the leafy valley below. Nestled in the French Alps, the town of Les Côtes-de-Corps was barely a two-hour drive south of Geneva. She had driven nervously after the shoot-out in Studio Twenty. Janusz had slept while Kim navigated the winding roads to the safe house with the help of GPS. Halfway between Lyon and Marseilles, it was the perfect location to lie low. They had spent the past eight days hiking, reading, eating, and resting. They occasionally drove to the town of Corps for food.
Janusz was growing restless by the day, but there was no sense in pushing forward without fresh intelligence on Dr. Ahvaziâs next move. The fiasco at Studio Twenty had come as a surprise. The Iranians always seemed one step ahead. What else did they know about his efforts to stop them? He had used proper tradecraft yet failed to protect another source. It was eating him alive.
Janusz peered at the valley below after walking out to get fresh air. The blue waters from the nearby Lac du Sautet were partially visible. The high-pitched whistle of the Alpine chough, an indigenous bird, shifted his focus to the calming sounds of nature. The icy crispness of the air rejuvenated his senses. Strolling down the pebbled path, he heard the distinct sounds of another pair of feet from behind. Turning abruptly, Janusz pointed the pistol at her face.
âEasy, boy, this is no time to shoot your load prematurely,â Kim said half in jest.
âJesus, Kim, I thought you were sleeping.â
âI was. You have a phone call. Itâs Tony.â
âLovely, what does he want?â
âYou can ask him yourself,â she said, handing over the phone.
âTony, shouldnât you be sleeping?â
âIâm in no mood for jokes. We have too much going on.â
âSorry, how can I help?â
âMichele Camus, chief of DGSE, called CIA Director Kellerman five hours ago. French intelligence intercepted a call between the CEO of ProtoVax, a pharmaceutical located in Lyon, and a man who identified himself as a representative of the Iranian Pasteur Institute. The Iranian offered to make a fifty-million-euro investment in ProtoVax in exchange for a twenty percent stake. He agreed to meet them in Lyon four days from now. You wonât have far to travel from where youâre standing.â
âLet me guess, ProtoVax is developing a cure for Marburg?â
âNot just developing. Theyâre approved for human trials. We believe ProtoVax doesnât expect to make money on the Marburg treatment. The media exposure surrounding a cure for the worldâs deadliest virus is what theyâre really after. The cash infusion from Iran could help speed up the timeline of bringing this drug to market.â
âDo the executives at ProtoVax have a clue about Iranâs motives?â
âThey donât care; money is all that counts. DGSE, on the other hand, knows where this is headed. Thatâs why they contacted the CIA to propose a joint operation.â
âSo nice of them.â
âListen up, they want to work with the US government to recruit the man who is headed to Lyon.
